EDL thugs target trade union and labour movement bookshop

Members of the English Defence League invaded Merseyside’s main trade union and labour movement bookshop on Saturday.

The EDL is an organisation of racist thugs with fascists in its midst. It primarily targets Muslims with its vicious racism. But it is increasingly turning its sights on other traditional fascist targets, such as trade unionists and socialists as well as ethnic minorities.

The News From Nowhere bookshop is a central part of the trade union and labour movement in Liverpool, selling tickets for antiracist events and coaches to anticuts protests, as well as books on everything from feminism and activism to the local area and children’s literature.

On Saturday 7 May, around 15 EDL supporters, arrived at the bookshop with flags. A group then came into the shop and attempted to intimidate staff – including making comments to female staff about pornography – before they were eventually moved on by police.

Sara Newton from News From Nowhere said:

We are still wondering how EDL members asking us if we stock pornography is challenging terrorism or defending England. We’ve never quite figured out what they are defending England from and why it takes 15 men and a flag to do it in our shop.

Liverpool councillor Louise Baldock spoke out against the EDL thugs and their racism and intimidation after the incident. She said:

With its international port witnessing many centuries of people moving to and through the city, Liverpool has always offered a welcome to new citizens. The EDL, with their hatred and intimidatory tactics, try to scare decent people into becoming bigoted like them.

We are not listening and they will find no succour here. Liverpool is proud to be a world in one city.

Antifascist campaigners believe the targeting of News From Nowhere is sign of the EDL’s widening agenda. UAF North West organiser Paul Jenkins said:

The racist EDL claim only to be against “militant Islam”. But now they are intimidating a progressive bookshop, News From Nowhere.

It follows the EDL’s attempted intimidation of an antiracist conference at Unite the union’s office near Liverpool’s Lime Street in April, and shows their real agenda.

They start by attacking ethnic minorities, but move on to target trades unionists, feminists and others as part of a wider attack on all our democratic rights. We must not be intimidated by racists and fascists. UAF will continue to work with others to oppose the EDL and their friends in the fascist BNP.
