9.10pm Leeds – high-profile BNP defector Chris Beverley’s bid to take a seat in Leeds for the English Democrats has failed. Beverley, still apparently assistant to BNP MEP Andrew Brons, came in third, well behind the first two candidates. Neither the BNP nor the English Democrats succeeded elsewhere in Leeds.
Boston, Lincolnshire But the English Democrats have secured two seats in Boston’s Fenside ward on very low votes. Former BNP councillor David Owens won on just 195 votes, after defecting to the English Democrats, while Elliott Fountain was elected with 231 votes.
8.20pm Charnwood, East Midlands – the BNP has held on to its seat in East Gastcote ward by the narrowest of margins, with the party’s Catherine Duffy winning on 401 votes, just five ahead of the second-placed candidate.
This means that the BNP has held onto just two of the 11 seats it was defending, has been entirely wiped out in its supposed Stoke heartland and failed to win any new seats.
Scotland – the showing for the BNP and National Front fascists in the elections to the Scottish Parliament has been pathetic. The NF stood five candidates in the constituency elections, who took an average of just 1% of the poll.
The BNP’s attempt to pull votes on for its regional lists was also tiny, with an average of 0.9% across eight regions. The NF took a derisory 0.2% for its regional list in North East Scotland.
3.40pm Burnley – just one BNP councillor remains in the town that used to be a stronghhold, after poor results for all of the fascists’ seven candidates this time.
3.30pm Thurruck – BNP have also failed to get anwhere in Ockenden, West Thurrock & South Stifford, Tilbury Riverside & Thurrock Park wards. Comprehensively rejected by the voters of Thurrock.
2pm Thurrock – BNP’s Derek Beackon, once a notorious Nazi councillor on the Isle of Dogs, east London, has come in a poor fourth place in Thurrock’s Chadwell St Mary ward. BNP have another poor fourth in Belhus ward.
And another bad BNP result in Grays Riverside ward, with just 167 votes – although that’s two votes more than Beackon got. And well behind in Grays Thurrock ward too.
That’s four of the seven wards where the BNP are standing already in. Not looking good for them.
10.35am Barnsley – the BNP’s 19 candidates have failed to take a single seat in in the South Yorkshire town. Barnsley is where the BNP failed miserably in a parliamentary byelection in March.
It is also where the racist thugs of the EDL turned out to stand with their BNP pals and attack a trade union march earlier this year.
10.30am North West Leicestershire – the BNP have lost the seat they were defending in Whitwick ward, with candidate Ian Mellor comfortably beaten.
The fascist party had already lost a second seat when their councillor Graham Partner became an “indeopendent”. Partner was also beaten at the polls yesterday.
10.15am Bradford – the BNP has managed to hold onto a council seat in Bradford’s Queensbury ward, where Lynda Cromie remains a councillor.
On the results available so far, that looks like the only “success” for the BNP across the country.
10am Wales looks like the BNP have failed miserably in Wales, where they hoped proportional representation might secure them a Welsh Assembly place through the regional list system.
But with all but North Wales declared, the fascist party has come nowhere near. Its strongest list vote was in South Wales East, where it got just 3.6% of the vote – not nearly enough to take a seat.
Sheffield – confirmed results from the council show the BNP’s two candidates have both come low in the poll.
Hull – the longtime Nazis of the National Front put the bulk of their electoral effort into Hull. Their results range from 3.2% to 5.2% in the five seats where they had candidates. A BNP candidate picked up 6.9% in another ward.
2.45am Birmingham – the BNP stood 15 candidates in Birmingham. So far, the council has declared five results in the wards where the BNP was standing, with the fascist party getting an average of 5.3% of the poll.
2am Stoke-on-Trent – this is a wipeout for the BNP in Stoke, to go with last year’s obliteration in Barking.
No wonder the BNP’s leader Nick Griffin didn’t turn up for the party’s manifesto launch in the city.
To complete official confirmation of the rout, the council have now confirmed that the BNP have definitely lost Meir South.

1.37am Stoke-on-Trent Council has now confirmed the Meir North result and Michael Coleman, former leader of the BNP council group, has definitely lost.
1.30am Stoke-on-Trent Council confirms: BNP’s councillor David Marfleet is also out in Bentilee and Ubberley. He didn’t stan, and the BNP did not stand a candidate to replace him.
Of the BNP’s five seats before the election, two are confirmed lost. We’re hearing that they are also out in the other three. If they don’t gain elsewhere, they are wiped out in Stoke…
1.27am Stoke-on-Trent Council confirms: BNP have failed to take Fenton West and Mount Pleasant ward.
1.18am Stoke-on-Trent Now confirmed by the council: BNP’s Steven Batkin has definitely lost his seat in Bentilee and Ubberley ward!
Batkin is the BNP fascist who insulted the late Leon Greenman OBE, a British Holocaust survivor and tireless anti-Nazi campaigner, publicly calling him a liar.
1.15am Stoke-on-Trent word is that BNP councillor Steven Batkin could also be out in Bentilee and Ubberley ward… Not looking good for the BNP in the city that was “the jewel in the crown” for them.
1.07am Stoke-on-Trent council confirms result: the England First Party has also failed to take Dresden and Florence ward.
1.05am Stoke-on-Trent council confirms result: candidate from white supremacist England First Party has failed in Goldenhill and Sandyford ward.
12.40am Nuneaton and Bedworth – council confirms result: BNP candidate has failed to take seat in Barpool ward byelection.
Friday 6 May 12.05am Stoke-on-Trent – We’re hearing from inside the count that former BNP council group leader Michael Coleman has been kicked out in Meir North ward. And BNP’s John Burgess has also been booted out in Meir South!
This is great news – especially for the Norscarf and UAF activists who have campaigned so hard across the city. Here’s a picture of them out leafleting in Meir North ward, by a handy street sign.
10.45pm In the key target area of Stoke-on-Trent – once dubbed the BNP’s “jewel in the crown” – the fascist parties divided the seats they are trying to win between them, with the BNP standing nine candidates and the white supremacist England First Party standing another six.
Just to underline the fellow feeling, candidates from the BNP and EFP have gone into the count together, Stoke antifascists report.
Around 50 Stoke antifascist campaigners were outside to stage a protest aganist the two fascist groups.
Thursday 5 May, 10pm Polls have closed.
A big thank you and well done to all the antifascist activists who have leafleted and campaigned against the fascist British National Party in the run-up to the elections.
Hundreds of thousands of leaflets and tabloids urging voters to stop the BNP have been distributed across the country.
We’ll have updates from key areas as results come in.
Some local authorities will count votes in the council elections tonight, with results due in the small hours of tomorrow. Others are set to start counting during office hours on Friday.
So it may be a while before there is a clear picture of how the BNP have fared nationally. Watch this space.
