Around 500 people attended the vigil in solidarity with the Bravanese Centre – the Somali community centre that was burned down in the early hours of 5 June 2013.
Many local faith communities, councillors, residents, trade unionists, students, young people united to support the local community. The event showed that an attack on one is an attack on us all. Speakers and attendees at the vigil showed that we won’t let racists and fascists divide us.
In a very generous + kind act of solidarity a Jewish resident donated £1,000 to the Bravanese Centre at the vigil. Local attendees of the vigil explained that students studying for GCSEs, A Levels used the space and the centre was shared with primary school.
The vigil was welcomed by Abu Bakar Ali + Omar Ali from the Bravanese Centre. Other speakers included London Assembly Member for Barnet and Camden Andrew Dismore, Leader of Islington Council Catherine West, Jeremy Corbyn MP, Dr Shuja Shafi Deputy General Secretary of the Muslim Council of Britain, Aaron Kiely NUS Black Students Officer.
Many local councillors, residents and faith communities also addressed the event. UAF chair Steve Hart chaired the vigil.
