Fascist EVF humiliated in Croydon

Up to 200 anti-fascists ensured last weekend was an embarrassment for the English Volunteer Force (EVF). They had claimed 3000 racists would turn up in South London but on the day could only bring around 40. The EDL splinter group showed their true colours by marching with members of Nazi groups like the National Front, BNP, ‘Infidels,’ and Combat 18. The fascists had chosen to target Lunar House, seeking to intimidate migrants and asylum seekers who come for interviews at Lunar House. PCS Union members at the building have also been targeted by these thugs. They gave nazi salutes and shouted racist abuse but were silenced by the counter-demonstration called by UAF/ We are Croydon/ and the PCS.

The counter-demonstration was everything the fascists rabble were not; colourful, lively, multi racial and determined that the racists won’t divide us. Chaired by a Croydon UCU Union member, Croydon Trades Council, PCS NEC members, Unison, NUT, UAF, Unite the Union and Love Music Hate Hate Racism (LMHR) speakers, all argued that when Nazis target workplaces and asylum seekers, we need to unite in action.

The former Mayor of Croydon, said:

“We have had our fair share of fascists here, over the years. They have never succeeded in their vile aims, and we will stop them, as before.”

Big cheers greeted his remarks.

No one in Croydon backed the EVF, unlike the locally organised anti-fascist presence. After around an hour, the Nazis slunk off, and anti-fascists held a short rally.

Elsewhere in London last Saturday, hundreds of anti-racist campaigners joined a march from the US Embassy to Downing Street in a show of solidarity with the family of black teenager Trayvon Martin. Concern was expressed at the climate of racism being whipped up particularly against immigrant and Muslim communities in Britain, in addition to racist policing and deaths in police custody.
