UAF and United East End held an excellent meeting at the London Muslim Centre on Monday (12/8) night. Around 100 people attempted and left primed to take the message out that the EDL will be kept out of Tower Hamlets come September 7. Discussion focused on how activists in the East End can build a huge demo to oppose the EDL, and put forward ideas of activities in the run up to then.
A number of people and representatives from organisations both local and national were in attendance. This included NEC members of Unite, PCS, NUT unions as well as the English Disco Lovers. Each spoke of what they will do to encourage the biggest turnout with lots of banners from union members. UAF members from across London, pledged their efforts to assist and said they will be holding local stalls, leaflettings and events to build the demonstration. Friends from numerous faith groups including the East London Mosque, also emphasized the need for a big and broad based demonstration. Councillors and representatives from the Tower Hamlets Mayor’s Office attended and spoke as well.
Around 25,000 leaflets were distributed for activities which include leafleting at football grounds, an anti-racist Cavalcade, and regular tube flyerings. Several workplaces are being leafleted in East End this week, and across London, in the days ahead. Students also met to plan how to ensure a lively, student turnout. Weyman Bennett stressed that the way to inflict defeat on the EDL, is through huge numbers on the day which will ensure they are kept away from Tower Hamlets.
A very encouraging meeting and a real buzz in the air.
