Updated – Cambridge Polish Club Cancels far right Rafał Ziemkiewicz Meeting & other UK speeches off

Thanks to Rupa Haq and sources in Cambridge, from last night, it’s now confirmed that the far right, Polish commentator Rafał Ziemkiewicz, has cancelled his visit to the UK labelling Britain as fascist! ‘Result’ to quote Rupa Haq, well done all anti fascists, including UAF members, who campaigned over this, in Ealing, Slough and Cambridge.

Any individual or group supporting Islamophobia, anti-Semitism or racial discrimination is not welcome…
I can assure you that the residents of the city I represent do not support views of this nature in any way.” Daniel Zeichner MP

Cambridge Unite Against Fascism (UAF) is pleased to hear from Cambridge Polish Club that the meeting with Rafał Ziemkiewicz has been cancelled. Ziemkiewicz has been responsible for a spate of Islamophobic and anti-Semitic comments in his native Poland. He described Muslims as “invaders” and “barbarians” seeking to take over Europe, while he has also called the reality of the Holocaust into question – only last month he made a ‘joke’ about Auschwitz and appeared to blame Jews for their own suffering.

These comments come during a period of increasing racist attacks, with the alarming growth in support for Neo Nazi parties in many countries across mainland Europe, including in Poland. A march in Warsaw at the end of last year of 60,000 people saw banners proclaiming that Poland should be part of a ‘white Europe’. In response , anti Fascists in Poland will be marching in Warsaw on March 17th, United Nations Anti Racism Day. We will be marching in London on the same day, and call on anti racists and anti Fascist to join us.

Cambridge UAF believes that there should be no place in our diverse society for anti-Semitism and islamophobia. We were central to the campaign to get Ziemkiewicz ‘s meeting cancelled, a campaign that involved local MP Daniel Zeichner and leader of the council Lewis Herbert, along with local UAF members. We welcome the fact that the Polish Club are no longer hosting this event, and look forward to continuing to working with the local Polish Community in opposing all forms of racism and scapegoating. There is a chance that Ziemkiewicz will try to reschedule his event somewhere else, so we call on anti Fascists to be vigilant and to watch our Facebook page for updates.
