Anti fascists determined – fascist ‘Tommy Robinson’ will not pass!

Anti fascists in the North West of England have been out leafleting and taking part in labour movement events such as May Day, to stop fascist ‘Tommy Robinson’ becoming an MEP.

Paul Jenkins, UAF North West organiser said,  “Over this weekend and Monday, those involved in our efforts will have leafleted people in Manchester, Liverpool, Bolton, Blackpool, Burnley, Lancaster and elsewhere.

I’ve just spoken at a May Day rally in Cumbria and stressed people need to turn out in high numbers in the Euro elections to lessen the chances of the thug getting elected. People took away, as elsewhere, bundles of leaflets from UAF members”.

Fascist violence

Last week, a gang of Robinson supporters attacked anti-fascist protesters in Warrington, Cheshire. Alice Edwards was left bloodied in hospital, with a broken nose, after attending a protest against Robinson in the town.

She told Socialist Worker, “We heard that Tommy Robinson would be in our home town—I don’t like anything he stands for. Me and my mate needed to be out there to tell him that he’s not welcome.

“It’s his racism and fascism—he just wants to spread hate.”

Failed kidnapper and Robinson organizer, ‘Danny Tommo nee Daniel Thomas, was involved in the attack.

Alice says Thomas, a high-profile member of ‘Vote Tommy’, punched her. She said, “The people who were involved were part of his entourage, they had come with him on the van.

“They pushed my friend and I rushed over and said, ‘What are you doing?’

“Someone else grabbed my friend from behind and another one of the entourage punched me in the head.

“Then Danny Tommo ran at me and started punching me.

“My mate came flying over and pulled them off and someone said ‘That’s what you get you faggot. “He punched my nose—I felt it break instantly.”

Thomas was involved in an incident with far right goon Vinnie Sullivan, nee Burke, in central London, on March 29th. The pair have fallen out over Thomas’  role with Robinson and Burke was arrested. He was released the next day. The tensions between sections of the far right shows the uneasy mix and the huge egos at play.

Thomas is one of a number of goons who provide ‘security’ for Robinson. Few if any are licensed and police are said to be ‘looking into’ the attack.  Robinson and other members of his entourage had earlier attacked Danyal Mahmud, in Warrington. Mahmud had thrown a milkshake over Robinson, “in self defence”.

Danyal said he had felt “a bit shaken up and shocked” by Robinson’s crew. He said, “I was in Warrington for a meeting and afterwards was on my way home.

“I had to pass this group, I kept moving location, I was the only Asian guy there. I said I just don’t want to speak to you on or off camera.

“I just got annoyed with him.” Huge support has come in for Mahmud, though of course fascists have targeted him, online.

Mass campaigning against Robinson is critical to stop him getting elected.

Stand Up To Racism (SUTR) and Unite Against Fascism (UAF) joined a protest against Robinson in Warrington on Thursday evening. He had organised a rally outside the filming of BBC Question Time.

SUTR and UAF also held 40-strong mobilising meeting in Manchester on Friday to plan taking on Robinson. The last week of his campaign has shown the danger posed by Robinson—and the need to stop him.

Alice said it was important to join protests and stop Robinson from becoming an MEP. If he was in power, attacks would happen again and it would be more regular.”
